BI: Decrease in Food Prices Push Deflation April 2016
Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Agus DW Martowardojo estimates, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in April 2016 will experience deflation on a monthly basis.
Agus said that deflation was driven by a fall in prices of some food commodities. Agus explained, the deflation predictions obtained from the Price Monitoring Survey (SPH) held the central bank until the third week of April 2016.
"Inflation in April to the third week we could see deflation of 0.33 percent. This is because there are some food prices are already occurring," said Agus in his office, Friday (04/22/2016).
Thus, said Agus, the rate of inflation throughout 2016 will be at the BI target in the range of 4 percent plus minus 1 percent.
"We look at the numbers this goal will be reached at the end of 2016," said Agus. Further, Agus said, the central bank appreciates the steps the government and Parliament will discuss changes to the state budget in 2016 in May or June.
"It's a good step from the government and also will exit XII Economic Policy Package that will give rise to optimism," he said.
Earlier, the Executive Director of the Department of Economic and Monetary Policy BI Juda Agung explained, forecast deflation in April 2016 was due to several factors.
He said, the decline in the price of fuel oil (BBM) in the form of gasoline and diesel as well as the decline in public transport fares is a key factor of deflation in April 2016.
Additionally, Juda also mentioned the government's efforts to lower interest rates also right. Because, with reduced interest rates, the inflation rate may slow.
