Jokowi: The world already eyeing the digital economy Indonesia


President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has heard the Chinese e-commerce giant, Alibaba, to enter Indonesia. According to him, it is a sign that the world is eyeing Indonesia. Society and the government was asked to prepare.


Alibaba is just entering Indonesia by buying a majority stake in e-commerce Lazada Indonesia. Alibaba's total investment is estimated at a value of $ 1 billion or equivalent to Rp 13.2 trillion.

"I heard that Alibaba has entered and is a warning to us all that from the outside already see our potential is great. The potential of the digital economy we are immense," he said when opening the event Indonesia E-commerce Summit & Expo (IESE) in Indonesia Convention Exhibition, in Tangerang, on Wednesday (27/04/2016).

"They (foreign companies) to come and join not anything, but all the digital business sector should already be filled in the company in the country," he added.


Request startup note


According to Jokowi, competition in the future will be heavier. Indonesia should be able to give birth to a variety of startup or digital pioneering effort in order to compensate for the challenges ahead.


Related to this, the President specifically asked the Minister of Communications and Information Rudiantara to notice startup development in the country.


"I have entrusted to the minister about this startup thought really. The budget was prepared very well. I have heard that the Government of Thailand allocates Rp 7 trillion for the development startup, "said Jokowi.


"Other countries have started it. If we can not catch up and exceed them, I sure would miss. World economic competition and competition is cruel, but it is a challenge that must be faced, "he added.


E-commerce Can Replace Mall


Jokowi believes development of the digital economy or e-commerce can make offline shopping center threatened. Because e-commerce provides the convenience of shopping, simply by opening the application and the order can be directly delivered.


"I imagine if this (e-commerce) is passed, then many malls were closed. Yes already can order online, transfer, create much less to the mall. Owners mall caution. The digital world is changing very quickly, "he added.


"I entrusted this e-commerce can be used to help our brothers and sisters. Primarily, farmers who want to sell their products, fishermen micro businesses that want to sell their products. And products from the village, village and rural schools (in order) can be connected with the application, "he concluded.


Just to note, the MCIT Rudiantara assess the value of e-commerce Indonesia in 2016 reached 30 billion US dollars or equivalent to Rp 395 trillion. The figure is predicted to rise to 130 billion US dollars or equivalent to Rp 1.714 trillion in 2020.
