Indonesian people to be heroes immortalized in Netherlands
Irawan Soejono, Indonesian students studying at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands, during World War II, was awarded the title of hero in the city of Leiden.
Irawan was shot dead by the army of Nazi Germany in January 1945.
Quoting an official statement released by the Indonesian Student Association (PPI) Leiden, Sunday (05/08/2016), ceremony attended by the mayor of Leiden, the Ambassador to the Netherlands, I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja, and Chairman of the PPI Leiden Ghamal Satya Mohammad.
The event was held on May 4, 2016 to commemorate the victims of World War II, known as Dodenherdenking warning.
"Government of Leiden, the Netherlands, conferred the title of Hero of freedom to Irawan Soejono (1920-1945). The title is awarded by the mayor of Leiden Pieterskerk on Wednesday, May 4, or 71 years ago after the death of him," wrote PPI Leiden.
Irawan at that time a member of the Association of Indonesia (PI), which is now the PPI Leiden. She also fought against Nazi Germany after realizing the danger of fascism for the struggle of the Indonesian nation.
According to Irawan at that time, it will be easier to liberate Indonesia from Dutch colonialism rather than Nazi Germany.
However, the fight ended when the hot tin Irawan German troops on a raid through his head. He died at a young age.
